Most books (accounts) use "Mark-To-Market" or "Mark-To-FairValue". That should be good for many P&L worksEven I am a front office trader with IT background, my everyday PnL report usually is more reliable that those from mid-office

Yes, it depends on the product you are trading, fixed income product might be different. As a trader, you calculate your P&L at the end of the day, and product control also needs to calculate theirs and recon. to agree the numbers and put it on ledger.

Product control P/L validation and reconciliation is similar to auditing to some extent.You don't need to write the auditing reports, but it might be beneficial to look at things from an auditors' perspective and their approach to find problems. Talk to someone in auditing might help.

The tricky parts must be fair valuing accounting of derivatives. You might have to check the latest FASB regulation changes since this recession, major changes happened.
