I asked canadian patent officer before, a canada resident can apply for US ppa and use it as a earlier filling date in Canada. A ppa only cost u 80$. Just got my ppa receipt last month. US Patent Office website:

什么是PPA？在加有没有类似国内“实用新型”这样的专利类型？申请费用一般要多少？找代理呢？本人所在公司用了加拿大公司的产品，但我觉得和一个别的设备联合起来能更好（按照国内的说法这应该是实用新型）所以想在加申请一个专利，然后卖给这家公司（也许人家看不上呢），所以有些问题，如果可能，请给予回答，谢谢！

I think it is called "design patent" in US, filing fee is 165US$. PPA is provisional patent application. ppa may not be filed for design invention. you can check out the detail from above link. btw. your patent seems to belong to your company

creation is good, but patent is a serious business decision, hiring a patent agent costs you 5k-10kUS$, unqualified patent has possible to trouble you in future. think it over before you decide to apply one please.
