VIN等于是汽车的身份证号，通过它可以查这辆车的历史记录，比如有过多少手车主、是否被拍卖、有无重大事故或翻修记录、是否曾作为租车、里程表是否被调过等等。CARFAX之类的专门公司出售这些资料。

thanks, online. i asked a mechanician to check the car. he suggested me not to buy the car cuz he found that the car may had a serious accidence before. why no record for it?

That's also my question, since i haven't found a car with an accident record logged in the carfax database.I think maybe only severe accident will be recorded down in the database, or those accidents covered by the insurance company will be logged.
So if you find a car with an accident record, that means this car has been in trouble.
But if you didn't find such accident record, it doesn't mean the car has been in any accident.
Just my thought.
