That's the condition on which your insurer agreed to enter the insurance contract. You are simply paying it on instalment.

If you don't have the car(which has been written-off(total lost)),they will cancel your policy as soon as you return the rental car which they should authorize you to use for about a week at their cost.(more inside)Once you buy another car,they will give you a new policy and return the money to your account.
