indeed, as a canada citizen, it doesn't make too much diff for u as H1B or TN-1. the biggest problem for H1B from china is if they get laid off and can't find new job in 30 days, they may have to go back to china.

on the other side, H1B has 6 years limit, and H1B transfer takes some time. so the decision of which visa is better will be based on each person's situation.

Thanks for the reply. the 3 and 4 for people with the silimiar experience. For these people who think US is better: if your employer is laying off, your green card application will be hold for at least 6 months. My LC has been pending for 1.5 years but company did a layoff last year, then this year, it is the third time. That means that even I did not get laid off I have to hope that the company will not do it again after 6 months.
I am really tired since I am not in California, I cam working for a big telecom company in mid west.

It depends on your luck. The LC will be on hold for 6 month if company lay off. I have LC pending for 1.5 years and some people has been pending for 2 more years. And when you changed the empoyer, you must restart the process.

I agree GC is really luck dependent. My friends who came to USA at the same time as I did, some of them almost get GC, some is in early application stage. The only one left is me, who are still on TN.

You need to change to H1 to apply for GC. If your company never have layoff, the process is OKBut once the company lay off people, the government will know. Your application will be put on hold(based on the law, yours should be denied because layoff proves that the employer does not need people at all). Now your dillema: big companies now always have layoff ( except a few like Microsoft); smaller companies may have survival problem. Either way, it is the luck. Many friends got GCs while I am so unlucky.

If one does not have a green card, living in US is just a torture. If one has a green card, things are a little bit brighter. For programmers, a green card just means one knows there are a lot of federal jobs but he is not elligible.
Some people in Canada plan to move to USA as soon as they get Canadian citizenship. Unless the good time a few years ago come back again, these people will be disappoited. I have a US green card now. Before I got it, I had never given up my plan to move to Canada.
Right now, H1B and TN visas cannot help much.

Have a few questions about green card and job oppotunities in universities....From your post, I see it is very difficult to find a job in the US. I have a friend now working in a US university as a professor. I don't know compared with other job oppotunities, how hard it would be to get a position in a university. Do you know anything about it, like in general what kind of background is needed?
Besides, how long does it usually take for one to get a green card? Is it that teaching in a university is easier for one to get a green card?
Thank you very much.

If you don't have a Ph. D from a descent university in USA, Canada or Europe, the chance is little. If you hold a Ph. D degree from China's most prestigeous universities, your chance is still poor. Here are the main reasons:
1) Your English is not good enough to handle things on the campus as a professor. The university may be afraid that the students complain about your English accent.
2) No people push you seriously. Don't be proud of your academic credits. If you are a Nobel or Schwartz prize winner, people may trust you. Otherwise, politics is more important than your academic achievements.
