"Citi shuts down Canadian investment bank

Citigroup is opting to cover corporate Canada from New York, giving notice to its entire staff of 12 investment bankers in Toronto this week.

Citigroup is in the midst of a wrenching global restructuring that will see 50,000 jobs lost. Part of the strategic shift will see the bank move primary coverage of Canadian companies to its Toronto-based corporate lending group, backed by U.S. investment bankers on corporate finance, and merger and acquisition work.

Those departing by mid-December include president and CEO Robert Gemmell, a pioneer in high-yield financings for domestic companies, and chairman Stanley Hartt, one of the country's true Renaissance men.

Citigroup spokeswoman Andrea Hurst said that "Citi continues to be committed to the Canadian market and to our clients through our seamless local coverage and global expertise."

      No worry, just be well prepared for the next three. :)

      In terms of future career:

      1. I believe you have no problem in landing a new job in Canadian financial institutions although it's now the year end and everything slows down. If you are member of Toronto CFA Society, you may find some job postings and contacting info of job agents in the field.


      2. You may also want to take a look at Asian markets. Economies over there are not as desperate as in NA, some sectors are actually expanding slowly. You may try SouthChinaMoringPost's career website (http://www.classifiedpost.com/jshome_landings.php) for postings.

      3. It's indeed a good time to do MBA now. If you haven't written your GMAT yet, perhaps you could only catch up the last round application deadline of those top programs in US or Europe, which normally send out most of the offers by round two. However, you should have no problem catching up the deadline of Ivey or Rotman.
