My suggestions

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛First, I want to send you my words of congratulations.

Second, I am a new immigrant here WITHOUT a job. So what I say should not be taken too seriously.

Now it is my opinion:

1. Where can you life be more happy? With 120k USD in China or 100k CAD in Canada? I think if you only consider things purely from the economic side, you should go back to China, and this is the first suggestion for you. Of course, going back China also means some sort of unstable. However, I only know about the possible risk of politics is higher in China, nothing else.

2. As you said, you might just want another job change some 4-5 years later and you are worrying that working in China will seize you the possiblility of doing that. I do not know exactly how many years have you been staying here in the North America, but I can tell you that China has a lot of highly payed employees nowadays. Like in the company I worked once for a while, the boss hired a manager for 700k RMB per year, and the company is by no means a large company in China, though it is the best and biggest in its field. See that? And, I think wherever it is, once you are in the proper "circle of people", you are not likely to worry about moving among companies.

3. Quality of life. This is the most difficult part of all. If you prefer a quiet life, stay here. It is slow paced. However, if you prefer a more challenging life, just go back. I guess life in China nowadays is just something like life in the US if you just talk about the tense. If you prefer living in a good environment, stay here. Remember that once back to China, no matter how rich you are, what best living areas are you in, when you are out of your home everyday, you are no different than anybody else. Roads are nearly always jammed in those big cities, always crowded with people, etc; If you prefer best Chinese food everyday, go back of course, why bother stay here? I think there is still one thing to take into consideration: with the high salary you get in China(God, it is really high consider how cheap is daily life in China), you can and definately should save some more than 20k USD as your savings there. So what? You get a more than 100k USD savings 5 years later! That means, even you got lay-off at that time, this money is enough for you to lead a not too luxury life in China for more than some 3 years, a time which is just more than enough for you to find a new job.

Now, my finally suggestion is: I much prefer that you go back than stay. Again, do not take my words too seriously.

Finally, how did you get those chances? Can you give me some suggestions on job-hunting? Thanks.

  • 工作学习 / 事业与工作 / Just got a offer from Microchip, Design Center Manger in China 120K US per year. Now I'm 100K CAD per year. But I don't want to back to china, I like Calgary. Any advice?

    • if enjoy current life, why bother?
    • Finding a 100k job in canada is pretty easier than finding a 120k $US job in china, think about it. It's in a much much different level.
      • The problem is...
Normally I can keep this kind job about 4-5 years, after that it very hard for me to keep or change, I don't have any degree from oversea, at that time even I back to canada, it's hard to find a job like now. But I can keep current job as long as I want, or change a same or higher level job in Canada or US easy, since I'm a P.ENG.
        • The key point is ...

            • what do you mean by
"normally you can only keep that kinda job for 4 to 5 years" ???
              • After 4-5 years, the company must make choice, let you go or give you a promotion. If you don't have PHD, It will very hard to goto higher level than manager in China.
        • So stability is the primary requirement. Then don't go back to China. BTW, you are using too much comma in your post.
        • If I were you, i will take that chance. Why do you think you can't find a decent job here after working as a manager in a US company for several years? I am sure you can and it will start at a higher level.
          • You can not be a manager here, why? language. Since you have left the detail design area for 4-5 years, you can not back to technical area.
            • don't agree.
    • Who said language is the bottleneck for immigrants? Look at Clagaryman's language, and look at his salary. Sigh!
      • For immigrants, your boss never ask your language as good as native. As long as you let them know what you are talking about. But if you goto busness or manegment, language is importent.
什么是P.ENG. 呀?
          • cetificated engineer my understanding. very difficulut to pass it. if you have it, you can rely on it for your whole life. Gold bowl.
            • Professional Engineer. not so difficult as you thought. do not guarantee higher paycheck either.
              • 100K is quite good high for me. My position band is 65K.
                • hey, that supposed to be a private thing :-)
                • I still believe $$ alone is not gonna make me move.
                  • Please give some detail.
                    • i guess it's fair to say higher or lower paycheck is always a comapative thing, which has to be evaluated together with other elemets, e.g. if it's able to bring about a quality life.
otherwise everyone would "flow" to US or Japan where, nomally, provide more $$. You may have your own definition of Quality, of course. No matter how you define it, it's not just $. Try to ask yourself this "classic"question: Why do I want to move to Canada? That's not about money by all means, right?
                      • "Why do I want to move to Canada?" Actully, I move to Canada just for $$. But after so many years live in Canada, Calgary,
I just love the life here. Don't need to work day and night, enjoy the glof, skii, lakes and Rocky Mountains.
              • Looks the salary depends on the Engneer's area, say microchip.
                • true.
    • wow, PFPF
    • two days ago, a recruiter from calgary told me there was a position in china. yesterday she told me that it was closed. I know, you got it, and you are still hesitating. so give me this job. wo, wo, wo..
      • No, it's not me. Microchip is in Chandler, Arizona, USA.
        • the position is in China.
        • haha. I only know that the recruiter is from calgary, maybe the company is from USA.
          • Maybe it is.
    • you should go to china, and after 4or 5 years, things will change, you will get more opportuntiy in China. It's very normal to move from techincal to management, don't you worry about this.

    • Funny, this guy (with P.Eng) got 100K CAD per year. 120K US in CHINA. ??!!?? No comment
    • But why you apply that job if you don't intend to take it.
    • if you don't want to back to china, and u like Calgary, why apply a job in China?
