He stumbled around in the cold, frigid air, his breath solidifying as soon as he let it out. The snowflakes were now falling down so heavily that it seemed to be a rush of white water pushing Jonas back, foggy glass preventing him from seeing.
But Jonas still trudged on, strength brought on from reaching Elsewhere, only a few yards away. The buildings now loomed over him, their shadows cast over him, and he could no longer see the moonlight. He followed the sound of singing, something that was as beautiful as color, in a different way. It reminded Jonas of the birds behind in the forest, a happy memory rooted in his mind. The birds had chirped and twittered, loud and clear. It had given Jonas certainty that there was still true happiness alive.
At last, when Jonas finally reached the nearest building, he collapsed on his back. He couldn't push himself any further. Despite that, he still felt the ridiculous happiness that coursed through him on the hill. Jonas's twisted ankle throbbed more than ever. His breaths came out ragged, chest heaving. Through his half open eyes, Jonas could see white specks that glittered in the sky, like the snow, but only brighter and more beautiful. He recounted a memory the Giver had given him, faint, like the memories of heat, but still there. In the memory, Jonas had sat by a campfire at night, and saw stars. They looked much brighter, truer, with his own eyes.
Gently, Jonas felt himself being lifted towards a warmth that brought a small smile to his mouth. And for the first time in a while, he heard Gabriel laugh. A weak one, but a laugh all the same.
"Don't worry," Jonas's last consciousness grasped, "you're safe."更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
