本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛She was born in a middle-class family in China. Her parents loved her very much, but they didn’t have time to take care of her. They were too busy with their own work and business. After she was 4-year-old, she started to stay in the kindergarten all the time.
She missed her parents, and she wanted to please them. She took all suggestions from her parents and teachers, followed all instructions, and made all the efforts to be a good child. In her little heart, making trouble to her parents was the last thing to do, she wanted her parents to focus their valuable time on their work and family, and she wanted her parents to be happy. She made that! She was always a perfect child.
After she grew up, she valued self-discipline. She believed that “self-discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.” She was always a good student and a good employee. In her memory, there was only one big disagreement between her parents and her: her marriage.
She fell in love with a young guy in college. He was handsome, intelligent and kind. In fact, what attracted her most was his deep love to her. They had such a good time together, full of sweet memories. But when the graduation day came, both of them became silent: They would go back to their hometowns, which meant they would live in two different cities.
There were 400 kilometers between their cities. And the young man did not give up their love. He started to visit her city biweekly or monthly depending on his working schedule. To save both money and time, he chose the night train. He took the train at 10 p.m. on Friday night and arrived at her city at 6 o’clock in the morning. They spent the whole weekend together. They went to shopping together, they had dinner together, or they went to all the travel spots together, like all the young people in love. On Sunday afternoon, he took another train back to his city at 5 p.m.. None of them remembered how many times they had stood together waiting for the train; the train station was the most familiar spot for both of them. They also called each other after 9 p.m. every day, because the longer distance call between cities was half-priced after 9 p.m..
Two years past. Her mom said: “Well, he is really a nice guy. But we want you home; you can have a better future in our city.” That’s true. She had a good job and an easy life in her city. As a computer engineer in a national bank, her boyfriend also had a good job and an easy life in his city. What to do?
One day, he called her, “Let’s go to Canada. We can live together and we can have a better future together!” Looking at him in his eyes, full of joy and excitement, she said “Yes!” They were still young at that time and they wanted challenges. And the most important thing was that they could get married and live together! After two more years, they landed on Person Airport, Toronto.
Like all the immigrants, their lives were not easy. To support their lives and education, both of them took part-time jobs. She successfully completed a specialized honored bachelor degree, and he completed his master degree with excellent grades. After she graduated, she got a job in a reputable bank and started to support their family. They struggled to balance their budget after they paid back all their student loans. But they never regretted because they were always hopeful about the future. Finally, all the hard work was paid off. On the seventh year after their immigration, they had their big and comfortable home together, and they had two beautiful and smart kids together!
Well, love is not all about flowers, money, diamond rings or fame; it is about responsibility, promise, self-discipline, and hard work. You make your word, and you keep it. And for most of the Chinese, family is always a big house, with beloved ones living together, hand in hand, heart to heart and side by side forever! (家)
