本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I think I watched half of it if I remember correctly. It was staged around 1999/2000, right? I walked out of the theatre half way. Not that it is that bad, it just didn't click with me, and I kind of expected what the director is trying to say: fragility of life, fear, meaningless killing, loneliness of human being magnified in such extreme life and death setting... anyway maybe I should shut up before I get a video and finish it.
"Devils at Door" is particularly relevant to us Chinese. I totally don't know what to expect throughout the whole movie. It revealed the kind of emotions and characteristics deeply rooted in our people, a lot of these we have been deliverately hiding away from ourselves, enforced either by government propaganda or our own self-esteem. There are also glorious momentsin the movie. When Jiang Wen dashes into the detention centre, knife in hand, chasing the once so pround Japanese all around, it made my blood boil. But when I started to think about it two hours later, even this heroic act is somewhat pathetic: it's unorganized, it's blind, it's futile. As a director, Jiang Wen did a terrific job, this is the stuff that should go into movie history.
If you like this movie, you probably also like Liu Zheng Yun's novels. My personal favorite is "Living among the legends of my homeland" (Gu Xiang Xiang Chu Liu Chuan). This is China's 2000 years of political history in a fable.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
