"I think it's good here to have an English name," he says. "Very important. It can be difficult to pronounce Chinese names."
Which is why his daughter Siqi already has her English name — Sky — and his wife Guang Yu Dong will have one when they come to join him, perhaps later this year.
"I've asked her," Zhou says. "I think maybe Anna.
"Siqi is 8. When she comes to Canada, maybe I'll give her another name. Sky is not really a name for here."
Zhou works nights at a food processing plant and lives in one cramped and sparsely furnished room — bed, chair, computer — in a rowhouse off Dundas St. W., with a shared bathroom and kitchen. He leads the way up the narrow stairway. There's a little sign on his door, red with gold characters.
"The very first moment I saw my daughter born, the first word I spoke to her was in English: `Welcome.'
"And she smiled. My daughter looked as if she understood me.
"My English tutor told me, `Your daughter deserves something better.' I'm thinking, what is a better thing? To go to a Western society, where the environment is cleaner and the education is better.
"When the airplane landed at Toronto International Airport, I looked out and I thought, `Yes, this is the right place.'
