100,000 surveys distributed - over 19,000 returned, with 18,724 qualifying for the sample
Average number of vehicles in a household - 1.81 (40% of households have one vehicle, 45% have two)
Average number of individuals of driving age in a household - 2.02 (23% have just one, 59% have two, and 11% have three)
65% of respondents drive a passenger car, 35% drive a light truck (includes minivans)
Average odometer reading is 115,051 km (2000 survey - 112,981 km)
Average distance driven over past 12 months is 20,830 km (2000 survey - 21,241 km)
21% of respondents purchased extended warranty coverage for their vehicle (down from 23% in the 2000 survey)
Reliability is the most influential vehicle-related factor in choosing a vehicle (50% of respondents mentioned it as a factor in their decision)
Performance/handling was the next most influential factor, with 35% mentioning it
86% of respondents would acquire the same vehicle again if given the chance to go back in time to when they originally made the purchase
On a scale of one to 10, the average vehicle satisfaction rating was 8.21, with 77% giving their vehicle an eight, nine, or 10
The average dealership satisfaction rating was 7.49, with 62% rating their dealership an eight, nine, or 10
49% of respondents acquired their vehicle new, while 51% acquired it used
Among used vehicle purchasers, 49% purchased from a new car dealer that sells used cars, 18% purchased from an independent used vehicle dealers, and 31% purchased from a private individual
The average odometer reading for used vehicles at the time of acquisition was 82,010 km
Among all respondents, 34% purchased their vehicle using cash, 17% purchased their vehicle with a loan, 36% purchased using a combination of cash/loan/trade, and 10% leased their vehicle.
Of those leasing, 50% plan to return the vehicle at the end of the lease
Blue is the most common colour of vehicles (16%)
The average weekly fuel cost is $32.61 (in 2000, it was $33.17) and 59% claim to shop around for the best fuel prices (compared to 57% in 2000)
The average insurance cost is $906
9% of respondents claim to have been involved in a collision in the past 12 months
The most common repair area is the braking system (38%), followed by suspension/wheels/tires (31%)
The average maintenance cost is $790, with an average of $138 of that total going towards tires
31% regularly use a CAA Approved Auto Repair Service (AARS) certified outlet for their maintenance and repair requirements (45% were uncertain as to whether or not their usual outlet had certification)
14% usually do their own oil changes, while 40% visit a dealership, 23% visit an independent garage, 6% visit a department/warehouse store, and 14% visit a specialty shop
7% do their own servicing and repairs (besides oil changes), while 44% visit a dealership, 32% visit a general repair garage, 3% visit a department/warehouse store, and 4% visit a specialty shop
Average satisfaction scores (out of 10) - dealership (7.67), general garage (8.18), department/warehouse store (6.90), specialty shop (7.94)

15% of respondents plan to acquire a vehicle within the next year
47% plan to acquire a new vehicle, 34% plan to acquire a used vehicle, and 19% are undecided
79% plan to purchase their next vehicle, 7% plan to lease, and 14% are uncertain
For future purchases, the most common desired safety feature is anti-lock brakes (69%), the most common entertainment/communication feature is a CD player (69%), the most common convenience/comfort item is air conditioning (83%), and the most common accessory item is a block heater (40%)
