ask for experience or Canadian experience. A couple of them got
job offers luckly. A lot are still struggling to put one foot
into the closing door of IT world.

I don't agree that we cheat. My wife is learning in a JAVA
school now and we will end up with a job without cheating. I
am confident and honest. I myself was also a Zhuang3Han2
from Marine Geology to IT Consultant. I didn't cheat when I
applied the job. I wrote down what I have done before and what
makes me different, then I got a job.

The other day, I met a lady in her 40's in a JAVA school. She
asked me about which course to select and how the prosibility
of getting a job would be. She was taking Unix Administration
courses. After made clear her past experience, I suggested
her take Oracle or any Database Management courses. Off course,
she didn't buy me. The lady has had years of experience in
South East Asia as Quality Control Manager or similiar
positions. She is very familiar with ISO900 and TQC. Her
education in China was Industrial Management. Such a background
is perfect for Database Management because no matter industrial
or commercial management has to deal with database in the end,
and anyone who understands management issues is valuable. I spent
almost an hour persuading her. But she didn't buy. The last
suggestion I made to her is "before you can find a job or make
final decision of which course to take, you must understand
who you are."

Many of us don't know who we are. And when prepare resume, upon
compared with those experienced born IT guys, we tend to think
of making up some experience to compensate. That is actually
often unnessary. Take the example of the above lady, what if
she takes Database courses and represent herself in resume as
following:

- Certificed Oracle Database Administor
- 5 years of experience in Quality Assurance
- understand management procedure for material control, transaction
inventory and logistics. (which are what Oracle eventually does)
- ISO900 and TQC provocator responsible for documentation, auditation
and implementation.

so, how does that sound. I could find the lady again and force
her to read my writing. Her problem is she doesn't know who she is.
So, she put her in the same bench as those born IT guys and
in order to compete with them, she may probably need to do
something of her resume. Sad.

We chinese immigrants are special. We are all well educated and
usually have years of experience. Try to list what you have done
for years and try to 'link' that to the courses you are taking
in JAVA or computer schools to make yourself a best combination
of the best. It always works.

I also know a guy who had been fired from a broadcast station. He
had had no experience about IT at all. He took MCSE and was hired
by IBM Canada dorectly. In his resume, he emphysized what he gained
from his career as a broadcaster and how that could be migratted
to the current position and how the employer would benefit from
hiring him as well as his experience.

I didn't mean don't cheat. If otherwise you will have to live in
a basement for your whole life, why not. Honesty doesn't pay you
50 k per year. But if you can, don't do it. And often than not,
you dont have to cheat. Your original profile could be much better
