本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛If a 50 years old accountant lost his job there is a good chance he can find a similar -- if not better -- position pretty quick. He has so many years experience built into his resume. And for years accounting is but a game of debits and credits. In his fifties he probably knows almost every trick in his profession and he is very valuable.
if a 50 years old programmer/developer lost his job there is not much chance he can find a similar -- in not worse -- position for a long time.
programmer is a profession for the young and energetic. people who has no obligation except themselves. they must be williing to be abused -- sleep 5 hours a day. eat pizza three times a day. don't leave the office except to pee. to compete with these young fellows the one in their 50s don't have much chance. and the worst thing is that the young ones always have the newest tools and skills. the old tricks does not mean a thing in this field -- unless you are good enough to be an architect. in that case you really don't have anything to worry but keep in mind for one thing -- there is only one architect out of probably 100 programmers.
programmers are just like women. their charm is age-dependent. a girl in her 20s is attractive just because of her youth and energy. in her 30s she reaches the peak of her charm -- the energy, the full life, the remaining trace of youth and the wisdom of a matured women. in her 40s she will have to apply a lot of makeup to make herself look attractive. in her 50s her body is no longer attractive enough so she has to utilize her wisdom and life experience to compete with the others' youthfulness and freshness.
bottom line: programmer is not a life-long profession. learn some other tricks while you are still young. this way you will survive in the future. you programmers can just look around you office and see how many old faces are there -- that tells you something.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
